MH17-related sanctions shock could push Russia into recession
Tighter sanctions have been imposed in the biggest standoff with Russia since the Cold War and now the questions are being asked: who will they hurt and how will the Russians react?
The West was already exasperated by Vladimir Putin's wars in the Ukraine and Crimea. The shooting down of MH17 and the continued fighting around the crash site has galvanised it into action.
"The United States means what it says, and we will rally the international community in standing up for the rights and freedom of people around the world," said US president Barack Obama.
The US and the European Union have announced further sanctions on Russia, targeting its energy, banking and defence sectors.
