Passenger charged after 'cracking airliner window with single punch' at 35,000ft on board flight from Florida to UK 

A holiday jet passenger has been charged with endangering a flight after he allegedly cracked a window with a single punch.

The pilot of Thomson Airways flight Tom145 radioed a message to police at Manchester Airport after the window cracked as the plane travelled at about 35,000ft over Ireland.

Officers went to the gate and arrested Nicholas Whittaker, 43, from Ashton-under-Lyne, before he disembarked.

The drama happened at about 5.30am as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner was coming to the end of its flight from Sanford Airport in Florida on May 25.

Rolf Harris has applied for permission to appeal against his conviction for indecent assaults against four girls, a British Judicial Office spokesman said.

The disgraced Australian entertainer was jailed for five years and nine months after a jury found him guilty of 12 charges of indecently assaulting four girls in the UK between 1968 and 1986.

Judicial Office officials said Harris's lawyers had lodged papers at the Court of Appeal, according to BBC reports.

Harris, who had pleaded not guilty to the charges, rejected accusations he inappropriately touched the women, telling his trial "they are all making it up".

News on a Demoted Worker Shoots CEO, Kills self in Chicago

The worker pulled a gun after entering the 17th-floor office to privately meet with the CEO, and during a struggle for the weapon, the CEO was shot in his head and abdomen, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said. The gunman then fatally shot himself.

"Apparently he was despondent over the fact that he got demoted," McCarthy said, adding that the alleged shooter was among "a number of people" being demoted as the company downsized.

The alleged gunman was later identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as 60-year-old Anthony DeFrance

Saint Germain lived in Boston, Massachusetts, and had worked as a health assistant at Harvard University the last five years. She had two children.

Officials with Haiti's national police declined to provide information about the investigation into the killing.

Saint Germain was apparently killed by gunmen last Friday, not long after arriving at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince. Friends say she was heading to the town of Les Cayes to visit family.

Police have shot dead two suspects in the killing of the imam of China's largest mosque and captured another, state media say.

Jume Tahir was the imam in Kashgar, in China's restive Xinjiang region.

He was found dead after morning prayers at the Id Kah mosque on Wednesday.

Police said the suspects, located shortly afterwards, "resisted arrest with knives and axes". They were "influenced by religious extremism", Xinhua news agency said.

Xinjiang, in China's far west, is home to the Muslim Uighur minority.

Tensions have rumbled for years between Uighurs and Beijing over large-scale Han Chinese migration and tight Chinese control.

Why is milk dated? Here's an unlikely resource—Alcatraz Island. During a tour of the former federal prison, a U.S. National Park Ranger noted that Al Capone "lobbied for milk bottle dating to ensure the safety of the city's children."

It was reported that one of Capone's family members in Chicago became ill from drinking spoiled milk. At that time, there were no controls on milk production, neither expiration dates nor regulations to prevent adulteration, dilution or skimming off the cream.

This drew Capone's interest to the milk business, and he saw several things: The milk distribution business had a shady character. Capone was comfortable with shady businesses, but he didn't like to see people, especially children sickened by unwholesome milk. He saw a potentially high profit in milk distribution, and with Prohibition soon to end, he had a fleet of trucks that could easily be used to transport milk.

Capone took two steps to move into the milk business. One was to acquire a milk processor, Meadowmoor Dairies. The other was to have the Chicago City Council pass a law requiring a visible expiration date stamped on milk containers.

On the second item, it was likely that Capone had already cornered the market on equipment to stamp expiration dates on bottles, and the passage of the legislation would help him take over the Chicago milk market.

United Nations officials described the killing of sleeping children as a disgrace to the world and accused Israel of a serious violation of international law after a school in Gaza being used to shelter Palestinian families was shelled on Wednesday.

At least 15 people, mostly children and women, died when the school in Jabaliya refugee camp was hit by five shells during a night of relentless bombardment across Gaza. More than 100 people were injured.

A Thomson Airways flight from Tunisia to Edinburgh is diverted after a woman shouts abuse at air crew.

A plane had to be diverted to Gatwick Airport after a woman threw her prosthetic leg at cabin crew and shouted abuse at them.

Sussex Police said the trouble began on Wednesday night when the 48-year-old woman started "swearing blue murder" and throwing food at crew on Thomson Airlines flight 297.

The flight, which was heading from Enfidha in Tunisia to Edinburgh, was diverted to Gatwick after the captain became alarmed.

The woman, who is unemployed and from Edinburgh, was arrested by police at the North Terminal at 10.22pm on Wednesday.

She was questioned by officers on suspicion of using threatening behaviour at Crawley police station.

The Obama administration has hardened its criticism of the shelling of a UN school in Gaza calling it "indefensible" and saying there is little doubt the Israelis were responsible.

"We need our allies in Israel," said administration press secretary Josh Earnest "to live up to the high standards they have set themselves". Meanwhile those same allies were being invited to help themselves to more of the US arms stockpiles in Israel.

The statement said "forces on the ground will remain in place" during the truce, implying that Israeli ground forces will not withdraw.
