The Bramley apple pie filling has been named a national delicacy


It has long had its place in the hearts of many Britons but now the traditional Bramley apple pie filling has been named a national delicacy.
A European ruling has given the Bramley apple pie filling protected status alongside several other delicacies such as Italy’s mozzarella, champagne, the Cornish pasty and Belgian beer.
The mixture has been added to the European Commission’s Traditional Specialities Guaranteed (TSG) list which seeks to protect the reputation of regional products.

British Airways flight forced to land

British Airways flight forced to land in Montreal, media cite bomb threat.


A British Airways flight from Las Vegas to London was diverted and landed in Montreal early on Wednesday following a bomb threat, local media reported.
British Airways did not confirm the bomb threat, but said its flight from Las Vegas to London's Heathrow airport landed safely in Montreal and passengers left the aircraft safely. Some 300 people were on the flight, according to local media.

Pakistani police say they have shot dead Malik Ishaq, the leader of banned Sunni militant group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.
Ishaq, who had been detained last week, was in a police convoy in Punjab province when supporters opened fire in an attempt to free him, said police.
They said Ishaq was killed in a gunfight along with his two sons and 11 militants in Muzaffargarh district.
Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) has been behind some of the most violent attacks on Shia Muslims in recent years.
Punjab Home Minister Shuja Khanzada confirmed the news to AFP news agency, while a doctor at Muzaffargarh District Hospital said 14 bodies had been received there.
Six police officers were also reported injured but correspondents say the extent of their injuries is unclear.

Two men have arrived at court in Zimbabwe facing charges over the killing of Cecil, the country's most famous lion.

Professional hunter Theo Bronkhorst and farm owner Honest Ndlovu, are charged with poaching offences for not having the required hunting permit.
US dentist Walter Palmer shot the animal with a bow and rifle.
Mr Palmer, who says he was unaware of the lion's identity, paid for the hunt and could also face poaching charges.

The Afghan government is investigating new reports that Taliban leader Mullah Omar has died, a spokesman said.
The Taliban has yet to comment on the claim, which was made by top sources within the Afghan administration and intelligence agency.
The sources said the reclusive militant leader had died two to three years ago.

A spokesman for Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said on Wednesday that the authorities were trying to verify the reports.
