BLOOD CLOTS''
No link between HPV vaccine and blood clots: study
A vaccine that protects against four strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which can lead to cervical cancer, does not increase the risk of blood clots in women, new research has found.
The findings in the Journal of the American Medical Association are based on a study of 500,000 girls and women aged 10 to 44 who received the HPV vaccine between 2006 and 2013.
Using data from national registries, researchers in Denmark found no evidence of an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (blood clotting) in the 42 days after the shot, which they defined as the main risk period.
Of the 500,000 females in the study 4,375 reported cases of blood clots. Of those, 889 had been vaccinated during the study period.
HPV at a glace
- Human Papilloma Virus is a sexually transmitted infection
- Up to 80 per cent of adults will be infected at some point
- More than 120 HPV viruses are known to infect skin and mucous membranes
- Many carriers do not know they are infected and fight off the infection without symptoms
- Some HPV types cause warts – such as flat warts, genital warts and plantar warts
- 20 HPV virus types cause cancers including cervical, head and neck cancer, penile, anal, skin, as well as cancer of the vulva and vagina
- Not everyone infected with these HPV types develops cancer
- Most of these cancer cases are caused by HPV16 or HPV18
- In 2002, the World Health Organization estimated HPV caused 5.2 per cent of all cancers worldwide
- There are two types of HPV vaccine available; both protect again HPV16 and 18
When researchers adjusted for use of oral contraceptives, which can increase the risk of blood clots, they found no association between blood clotting and the vaccine.
"Our results, which were consistent after adjustment for oral contraceptive use and in girls and young women as well as mid-adult women, do not provide support for an increased risk of VTE following quadrivalent HPV vaccination," the study said.
"Safety concerns can compromise immunization programs to the detriment of public health, and timely evaluations of such concerns are essential."
The report said two earlier studies had suggested a link between the Gardasil vaccine, made by Merck, and a higher risk of blood clots.
The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in 2009 that there was an increase in patient reports of blood clots after the vaccination.
However, on further review, the CDC said 90 per cent of those "had a known risk factor for blood clots, such as taking oral contraceptives."
The vaccine aims to prevent the spread of HPV, which is the most common sexually transmitted infection.
Certain HPV strains can cause cancers of the cervix, head, neck and anus.
US health authorities recommend the HPV vaccine for boys and girls before they become sexually active.

''WORLD CUP''
Story of the match:
- Germany 5-0 up in 29 mins
- Klose record World Cup scorer
- Brazil's biggest World Cup defeat
- First competitive home defeat in 39 years
Brazil's World Cup dreams ended in humiliating and brutal fashion as Germany inflicted their heaviest defeat in the first semi-final in Belo Horizonte.
A thunderous occasion that began with Brazil riding a tidal wave of emotion was reduced to a nightmare as Germany were 5-0 up inside 29 remarkable minutes in front of a disbelieving Estadio Mineirao crowd.
Brazil's players mourned the absence of the injured Neymar before kick-off, but captain Thiago Silva was an even bigger loss. The result was their first competitive home defeat in 39 years, and the end of their hopes of making it to the World Cup final at the iconic Maracana on Sunday.
Instead, Germany will meet either Argentina or Netherlands, who meet on Wednesday in Sao Paulo.
Thomas Muller gave the three-time winners an early lead before a period of utter chaos saw Miroslav Klose break the World Cup scoring record, Toni Kroos add two more in the space of 179 seconds and Sami Khedira net a fifth.
Chelsea striker Andre Schurrle, on as a substitute, added two more after the break before Brazil's followers delivered what must be regarded as the defining insult to their national team - cheering every German pass and applauding their goals.
Many Brazil supporters, swamped with such anticipation as they gathered in their thousands around the ground hours before kick-off, were reduced to tears after less than 30 minutes, and reduced to such a state of shock that it was only at half-time that they registered their first serious dissent.
This equalled Brazil's heaviest margin of defeat, a 6-0 loss at the hands of Uruguay in the 1920 Copa America, but the impact of this reverse, not just on the world stage but in their homeland, will put this alongside the 1950 World Cup final defeat by the Uruguayans in Rio as their darkest football day.
Muller's early goal was a big enough setback, but the manner in which Luiz Felipe Scolari's side crumbled in the space of seven minutes is likely to be a matter of national debate in this country for years to come.
This was Brazil's first defeat at home for 12 years. The loss for a country built on sporting pride, and at their own World Cup, will be bad enough to take. The scale of defeat will take the inquests to a new level.
The statistics stacked up like pieces of rubble around the feet of Scolari and his players. This was the first time a team had scored seven in a World Cup semi-final, and the biggest defeat in one of these games since West Germany beat Austria 6-1 in 1954.

Brazil's first shot on target was in the 51st minute.
|
The five-time champions' team coach bears the phrase "Brace Yourself - The 6th Is Coming". It did indeed arrive, but only in the back of Julio Cesar's net.
With all David Luiz's defensive indiscipline offering rich pickings for Germany's speed and mobility, the game swiftly descended into a fiasco for Brazil.
Much has been made of their over-emotion and there was, in retrospect, an overblown public reaction to the absence of Neymar, injured in the quarter-final against Colombia, in the hour leading up to kick-off.
Scolari led his players off the team coach wearing a white "Forca Neymar" baseball cap before captain Luiz and goalkeeper Cesar held up his number 10 shirt during a stirring rendition of Brazil's national anthem.
It was all downhill, and rapidly, for Brazil from the moment Muller was the beneficiary of dreadful marking to steer in Kroos's corner.
Brazil simply fell apart and it was an invitation Germany were not going to refuse as Klose scored at the second attempt to set a new World Cup record of 16 goals in only 23 games.
What followed was one of the most remarkable passages of play in any World Cup game, let alone a semi-final, as Germany did not just look like scoring on every attack, they invariably did.
Throughout this World Cup there has been a suspicion a mediocre Brazil defence has been disguised. With the shield of Silva removed, they were simply taken apart by Germany, wilting under pressure and abject in coping with their attacking variety.
Kroos side-footed home a finish Cesar touched but could not save, then the midfielder quickly added another when set up by the unselfish Khedira.
Khedira added another before half-time in an example of the complete disintegration of Brazil's organisation, discipline and basic defence. He strolled towards the penalty area untroubled before exchanging passes with Mesut Ozil to score.
It was only then, perhaps as full recognition sunk in, that Brazil's supporters started to deliver a toxic reaction to their team, with striker Fred singled out for vicious treatment.

|
Thomas Muller has scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 12 World Cup matches.
|
Germany have scored more goals in this tournament than they did in 1990 and 1966 - a total of 16.
|
Despite a lively start to the second half that saw Germany keeper Manuel Neuer distinguish himself, normal service was resumed as Schurrle finished off a fine passing move before drilling a near-post finish past Cesar, who should have done better.
It was at this point the home fans threw their support behind Germany, cheering passing moves and even breaking into applause for Schurrle's goal.
Oscar's late strike was nothing in the way of consolation to them and they turned savagely on their players - many of whom left the pitch in tears - at the final whistle.
Brazil knew their World Cup dream might have to end. No-one suspected for a moment it would end like this.

""HARRY POTTER"
Harry Potter returns as greying 34 year old in new JK Rowling short story
Fictional boy wizard Harry Potter made his first appearance in seven years, returning as a nearly 34-year-old with grey hairs in a new short story by author JK Rowling.
In an article on the Pottermore website written in the form of a gossip column, Harry and his friends reunite at a tournament of the broomstick-riding game quidditch.
The 1,500-word story hints at signs of trouble for the famous wizard.
In the story Harry brings his two sons James and Albus last seen in the epilogue to the seventh and final instalment Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, to see the "2014 Quidditch Cup".
The story suggests there may be problems in his marriage to Ginny, now a journalist covering the tournament, asking: "Are cracks beginning to show in a union that the Potters are determined to promote as happy?"
About to turn 34, there are a couple of threads of silver in the famous Auror's (high-level wizard's) black hair, but he continues to wear the distinctive round glasses that some might say are better suited to a style-deficient twelve-year-old.
Millionaire author Rowling gives a teaser when she writes that Harry, played by the actor Daniel Radcliffe in the films spawned by the book, sports a new scar on his cheek to go with the lightning-shaped one on his forehead.
The story asks whether the "chosen one" might be "embroiled in fresh mysteries that will one day explode upon us all, plunging us into a new age of terror and mayhem."
"About to turn 34, there are a couple of threads of silver in the famous Auror's (high-level wizard's) black hair, but he continues to wear the distinctive round glasses that some might say are better suited to a style-deficient twelve-year-old," the story says.
Signs of trouble for Harry and his friends
Meanwhile the story touches on the troubles of Harry's best friends, the red-haired Ron Weasley played by actor Rupert Grint in the films and Hermione Granger played by actress Emma Watson.
Ron is said to be "thinning on top" and has gone to work at the family magic shop but the columnist whispers about "mental illness".
Ron and Hermione also have two children in the new story - son Hugo and daughter Rose.
Hermione has enjoyed a "meteoric rise" to Deputy Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement but the gossipy writer asks: "Does Hermione Granger prove that a witch really can have it all? (No - look at her hair)".
There is no sign however that Rowling has acted on her admission earlier this year that she should have married off Hermione to Harry, and that Ron and Hermione would probably have ended up in marriage counselling.
The new piece is part of a series about the Quidditch Cup a nod to the football World Cup in Brazil that are set to appear on Pottermore. The final article will be published on Friday and will see Ginny Potter cover the cup final between Brazil and Bulgaria.
Rowling has sold more than 450 million copies of the Harry Potter books which tell the story of the young wizard and his friends at the Hogwarts school of magic, while they have also spawned a string of hit films and the Pottermore website.
Her latest piece is written in the form of a gossip column by Rita Skeeter of the Daily Prophet, a character from the Potter books who draws on the author's own vocal criticisms of British tabloid journalism.
Rowling has been keeping busy since the seventh and final novel in the series was published in 2007.
She published her first adult novel The Casual Vacancy to mixed reviews in 2012 and has also released two big-selling crime novels under the nom de plume Robert Galbraith.
She announced last year that she will make her screenwriting debut by penning a series of spin-off films set in the Potter world, starting with Fantastic Beasts And Where to Find Them.
MULTI-MILLION BHAHT!!! thailand
Multi-Million Baht Pattaya Illegal Money Lending Operation shut-down
In a joint news conference by the Chief of Banglamung District and the Royal Thai Navy on Tuesday night, it was announced that 5 people had been arrested accused of running a multi-million Baht illegal money lending operation in Pattaya.
Khun Sakchai, the Chief of Banglamung District confirmed the arrest of 5 people at two rented houses at the Green View Village in East Pattaya, at the culmination of an undercover operation involving a man who had borrowed 870,000 Baht and had paid back a staggering 2 Million Baht which included the original amount plus a considerable amount of interest.
Payments were still ongoing but the man had ran out of money and received a visit from two men who warned the borrower that harm would come to him if further payments were not made. At this point, he contacted Banglamung City Hall who used the man to located the headquarters of the operation so it could be shut down.
The 5 arrests were made in two neighboring houses and featured the seizure of a Honda Accord, 17 motorbikes, Jewelry and other items which are thought to have been given to the men as guarantee of payment for outstanding loans.
The head of the operation is thought to reside in Chantaburi Province and is expected to be arrested shortly.
