HIV infection returns to four-year-old girl thought cured of disease

An American girl born with HIV but thought to have been cured of the virus has seen her infection return.
The child, now four, was born in the southern US state of Mississippi in 2010 to a HIV-infected mother who was untreated during pregnancy.
The baby was given a potent dose of anti-retroviral medication 30 hours after birth, and tested positive for HIV.
She went off her medication to suppress the human immunodeficiency virus when she was 18 months old, but somehow remained disease-free, showing no detectable level of the virus for more than two years.
Her case raised hopes that doctors may have found a way to cure young children who are born HIV-positive, simply by treating them with drugs early.
But during a routine clinical care visit earlier this month, the girl was tested and and was found to have detectable HIV levels in her blood, as well as a decreased T-cell count and the presence of HIV antibodies.
All those factors signaled HIV was actively replicating again in her body.
"Certainly, this is a disappointing turn of events for this young child, the medical staff involved in the child's care, and the HIV/AIDS research community," said Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute on Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Dr Fauci said the child is being treated once again with anti-retroviral medication and is doing well.
"The case of the Mississippi child indicates that early anti-retroviral treatment in this HIV-infected infant did not completely eliminate the reservoir of HIV-infected cells that was established upon infection, but may have considerably limited its development and averted the need for anti-retroviral medication over a considerable period," he said.
Researchers will now turn their attention to understanding why and how the child went into remission, with the hope of extending that time period further in future cases.

LUIS SUAREZ::BAN

World Cup 2014: Uruguay striker Luis Suarez loses FIFA appeal against four-month, nine international game ban for biting

Uruguay forward Luis Suarez, banned from all soccer activity for four months and nine competitive internationals for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during a World Cup match, has lost his appeal, FIFA said on Friday (AEST).
FIFA's appeals committee rejected the appeal filed by the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), although it can still take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), a FIFA spokeswoman said.
The controversial Liverpool striker sank his teeth into Chiellini's shoulder during Uruguay's 1-0 win over the Italians on June 24. The win sent Uruguay through to the last 16 where, without the banned Suarez, they lost 2-0 to Colombia.
Suarez initially denied biting Chiellini but apologisied nearly a week later.
"The truth is that my colleague Giorgio Chiellini suffered the physical result of a bite in the collision he suffered with me," Suarez said in a statement on Twitter.
FIFA's disciplinary committee ruled that he acted intentionally and handed him the longest ban ever imposed on a player at the World Cup, prompting fury in his South American homeland, where he was given a hero's welcome on his return.
FIFA later explained that Suarez was given a heavy punishment partly because he had twice before been banned for biting and because he had shown no remorse.
Liverpool has since held talks in London over the possible transfer of Suarez to Barcelona, although no deal has been finalised.
Chiellini himself has described the ban as excessive.

VAGINAL YEAST FACTS

Vaginal yeast infection facts

  • Most vaginal yeast infections are caused by the organism Candida albicans.
  • Yeast infections are very common and affect up to 75% of women at some point in their lifetime.
  • Itching is the main symptom of vaginal yeast infection, but burning, discharge, and pain with urination or intercourse can also occur.
  • Treatment involves topical or oral antifungal medications.
  • It is possible for a woman to transmit a yeast infection to a male sex partner, even though yeast infection is not considered to be a true sexually-transmitted diseasebecause it can occur in women who are not sexually active.
  • Treatment of yeast infection in men, like in women, involves antifungal medications.
  • Keeping the vaginal area dry and avoiding irritating chemicals can help prevent yeast infections in women. Consuming foods with probiotics may also help.

What is a vaginal yeast infection?

A vaginal yeast infection is an infection caused by yeast (a type of fungus). Vaginal yeast infection is sometimes referred to as yeast vaginitis, Candidal vaginitis, or Candidal vulvovaginitis. The scientific name for the yeast that causes vaginitis is Candida. Over 90% of vaginal yeast infections are caused by the species known as Candida albicans. Other Candida species make up the remainder of yeast infections.
Candida species can be present in healthy women in the vagina without causing any symptoms. In fact, it is estimated that 20% to 50% of women have Candida already present in the vagina. For an infection to occur, the normal balance of yeast and bacteria is disturbed, allowing overgrowth of the yeast. While yeast can be spread by sexual contact, vaginal yeast infection is not considered to be a sexually-transmitted disease because it can also occur in women who are not sexually active, due to the fact that yeast can be present in the vagina of healthy women.
Vaginal yeast infections are very common, affecting up to 75% of women at some point in life.

SEXUAL INFECTION'' IN MEN

Can a man get a yeast infection from his sexual partner?

Most experts do not consider yeast infection to be a sexually-transmitted disease, but cases of irritation and itching of the penis in men have been reported after sexual contact with a woman with a yeast infection, so it is possible for an infected woman to spread the infection to her male sex partner. Treatment of male sexual partners is not considered necessary unless the man develops symptoms.

What are the symptoms of a yeast infection in men?

Comment on this
Symptoms in men may include itching, burning, and pain at the tip of the penis. Discomfort during urination can also occur. The area may appear reddened or irritated. Symptoms may resemble those of other diseases, including some sexually-transmitted infections (STDs).

What is the treatment for yeast infection in men?

Comment on this
Treatment for men, like for women, is based upon antifungal medications. These may be applied as topical creams or taken by mouth in pill or tablet form.

How can vaginal yeast infections be prevented?

Because yeast can be present normally in the vagina of healthy women, not all yeast infections can be prevented. However, it is possible to take preventive measures that may reduce your risk of getting a yeast infection. These include always cleaning the genital area from front to back and changing out of wet bathing suits or damp clothes as soon as possible. Wearing loose-fitting cotton underwear can help reduce moisture and prevent yeast infections. Since chemical irritants can influence the balance of bacteria in the vagina, avoiding products with potential irritants like douches or scented tampons can also help. Regular baths or showers are an adequate way to cleanse the vagina, and douching is not recommended and may actually increase your risk of yeast infection.
Some evidence shows that consumption of foods with probiotics (healthy bacteria that are normally found in the body) like probiotic-containing yogurt may help prevent yeast infections.

HARRY POTTER..

Pottermore: How grown-up Harry Potter might look according to JK Rowling's new short story

Complete with greying hair, old specs and that new scar it seems the marriage problems will really take affect on Harry

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Following the recent revelations that Harry Potter, will grow into a greying 33-year-old, we've mocked up how the 'threads of silver' might look on the teenage wizard.
Fans have been offered a glimpse into Harry's future after JK Rowling resurrected her hero for a new short story that reunites him with his old friends at a Hogwarts school reunion.
The 1,500-word article posted on the writer’s Pottermore website, in the Daily Prophet section, by fictional reporter Rita Skeeter, describes how Harry also has a new cut on his face.
Here is a mock-up of how Harry might look:

It is seven years since the final instalment in the saga, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was published. That book contained an epilogue in which we briefly saw the characters as adults sending their own children off to Hogwarts.
The films also launched the acting career of Daniel Radcliffe, who played Potter on screen and is now a global superstar.
This new Pottermore story is not just an update for fans. It is written in the style of a newspaper report by spiteful gossip columnist Skeeter, who features in the Potter books, and reads as a piece of satire of celebrity-based journalism of which Rowling is not a fan.

Harry Potter author JK Rowling has hinted at the future life for the teen wizard, as he approaches middle age.
Ms Rowling has reunited the famous trio of Harry, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger for a Hogwarts School reunion, in a new short story.
Published on the writer's Pottermore website, the now 34-year-old Harry is described as showing "threads of silver" in his black hair.
His wife Ginny and their children also feature in the 1,500-word story.
Although Hermione has aged well her husband Ron has ginger hair that is "thinning slightly".

Building further mystery about the intervening years, the author describes a cut over Harry's cheekbone - a sign of membership in a top secret group of wizards called the Aurors.
The fast-forward to the future is set during a Quidditch match.
Edinburgh-based Ms Rowling made political waves recently when she voiced her support for a 'No' vote in the September Scottish independence referendum and by making a £1m donation to the Better Together campaign.
She has also recently published her second crime thriller under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.
Last July she was awarded damages in the form of a "substantial" charity donation after a solicitor at a law firm acting on her behalf revealed her as the writer behind the Galbraith name.
At the time, Ms Rowling described it as a "liberating experience" being able to publish literary work "without hype or expectation" that the Harry Potter series attracted

A valet charged with parking a Lamborghini Gallardo at a five-star hotel has crashed it into a concrete wall, causing $335,000 (£196,000) worth of damage.
Horrified guests witnessed the incident at Le Meridien hotel in New Delhi and the whole thing was reportedly caught on CCTV.
And instead of getting the tip, the hotel worker now faces the prospect of having to contribute to the repair bill.
The video is said to show the valet taking the car from the parking area to the porch entrance of the hotel where he then briefly got out.

The hood buckled under the impact of the crash.
After climbing back behind the wheel, the car then lurched forward for no apparent reason - sending a colleague diving for cover - and slammed head on into the wall.
The valet was injured and taken to hospital but discharged the same day.
A photograph published in the Times of India newspaper showed the front end of the sleek white supercar severely crumpled, with its hood forced up.
"The car had been parked by valets a number of times before," a friend of owner Nipun Miglani revealed.
A police case has been filed against Le Meridien - which has refused to accept responsibility - and the valet, named as Arun Kumar, with a claim for the full cost of the repairs.
The rear-wheel-drive Gallardo, named after a type of fighting bull, is capable of a top speed of around 200mph (321kph).
It sells in Europe for around $250,000 (£146,000) but import duties on supercars normally double their price in India.

'FATHER KILLS'

Father Kills Four Children Before Surrendering

A gunman kills four of his children and two adults before a dramatic three-hour stand-off

in a suburban area in Texas. A father has shot dead four of his children after opening fire at a house in Texas.

The suspect also killed two adults and critically wounded his 15-year-old daughter before armed officers chased and cornered his silver car in Spring, a Houston suburb.
The suspected gunman eventually surrendered after a nearly three-hour stand-off with police.
Texas stand-off
The suspect was in the car for about three hours
First, he led police on a nearly half-hour pursuit, then his car was sandwiched between two police trucks in a residential cul-de-sac a few miles from the scene of the killings.
Despite being surrounded by marksmen, the suspect remained "cool as a cucumber", Sergeant Thomas Gilliland said.
There were "two hours of constant talking with a man armed with a pistol to his head and who had just killed six people", he said.
The car is monitored by police marksmen
Police stopped the car about three miles from the scene of the shooting
After lengthy negotiations the suspect emerged from the vehicle with his hands raised, sinking to his knees before being arrested and detained.
When police arrived at the scene at around 6pm, they found two adults and three children dead.
Another child later died at a hospital.
The victims were two boys, aged four and 14, and two girls, aged seven and nine. The dead adults were a 39-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman.
The suspect is cornered
The car was eventually cornered by an armoured truck
The gunman and his wife are estranged, and she was out of state at the time of the killings. Two of the dead children were adopted.
Assistant Chief Deputy Constable Mark Herman said: "It appears this stems from a domestic issue with a breakup in the family from what our witness has told us."
The stand-off lasted into night fall
Talks continued into the night and the suspect eventually surrendered
Authorities did not release the victims' identities and did not say whether the adults who were killed were related to the children or their father.
The wounded teenager was able to call 911 and later warned deputies that her father planned to go to her grandparents' home to kill them, Sgt Gilliland said.
