The 33-year-old, working in Liberia, submits himself to an isolation ward, while a second US citizen is also said to be infected.
An American doctor working with Ebola patients in Liberia has tested positive for the deadly virus.
Kent Brantly, 33, recognised his own symptoms and confined himself to an isolation ward.
The medic, who is married and has children, is being treated at a hospital in the capital Monrovia.
Another US citizen has also been infected with the virus, according to the Samaritan's Purse aid organisation, for which Dr Brantly works.

Downing of MH17 jet in Ukraine 'may be war crime' - UN
he downing of the Malaysia Airlines jet in eastern Ukraine may constitute a "war crime," the UN's Navi Pillay says.
Pro-Russia Ukrainian rebels and the Ukrainian authorities have accused each other of shooting down flight MH17.
A Ukrainian official said on Monday that MH17's data recorders show it came down due to "massive explosive decompression" caused by a rocket.
Meanwhile, heavy fighting has again prevented an international police force from reaching the crash site.
The Ukrainian military said it was battling separatists for control of several towns near the site in eastern Ukraine.

Seal filmed swimming in Yarra with ropes around neck; wildlife officials concerned
Wildlife officials are worried about a large seal seen swimming in the Yarra River with what appeared to be ropes tangled around its neck.
A caller to 774 ABC Melbourne, Paul, said he was cycling along the bike track around 10:30am when he saw the seal eating something that appeared to be up to 1.5 metres long.
He said the "very large seal was having the time of its life eating a very large fish".
"Sadly, the seal did have quite a few ropes around its neck, but they didn't seem to be doing any major damage," he added.

lightning strike
Venice Beach lightning strike kills one and injures eight in California
One man is dead and at least eight people have been injured in the US after a lightning strike during a rare thunderstorm at Venice Beach, officials say.
According to witnesses, the bolt of electricity made a loud crack that sounded like an explosion on the warm and overcast afternoon.
"I heard this crackle and there was this giant bolt of lightning shooting across the sky and the loudest thunder I've ever heard," witness Joe Doro told KCAL-TV.
Victims were apparently in the water or very close to it when the lightning struck, local officials said.

Gaza:
Gaza conflict: Ceasefire stalls as fighting continues.
A 24-hour humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza has collapsed with both Palestinian militants and Israel continuing their offensives.
Hamas said it authorised the ceasefire to mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, but militants continued to fire missiles, and Israeli attacks also resumed.
Efforts for a permanent ceasefire have also stalled, after the attempt on Friday by US secretary of state John Kerry, Israel rejected that plan, saying it was too soft on Hamas.
Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu says his country will do what it must to defend its people.
Despite ongoing negotiations, there is no sign of a comprehensive deal to end the conflict.

Obama Calls: Ceasefire In Gaza.
Obama Calls For 'Immediate' Ceasefire In Gaza.
US President condemns Hamas' rocket attacks, but also stresses America's concern about the rising number of Palestinian deaths.
US President Barack Obama has called Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to urge an "immediate, unconditional" ceasefire in Gaza.
The call came as Hamas fired more rockets at Israel, despite claims it had accepted a UN request for a 24-hour extension of a humanitarian truce in Gaza.
Mr Obama "made clear the strategic imperative of instituting an immediate, unconditional humanitarian ceasefire that ends hostilities now and leads to a permanent cessation of hostilities," the White House said in a statement.
