Russia should be stripped of the 2018 World Cup in the wake of the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine, says Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.
He said it was "unthinkable" at present that the tournament could go ahead in the country blamed by the West for supplying arms to pro-Russian separatists suspected of shooting down the jet.
Football's world governing body Fifa this week ruled out calls from some German politicians for Russia to be boycotted, insisting the tournament could be "a force for good".

Costa Concordia for scrap

Costa Concordia wreck arriving in Genoa for scrapping.

Tug boats tow the Costa Concordia cruise liner as they arrive outside a port near Genoa in northern Italy, where it will be being broken up for scrap, on 27 July 2014.

The wrecked Italian cruise ship, the Costa Concordia, has arrived in waters near the port of Genoa for scrapping after a two-year salvage operation.
Its removal was one of the biggest ever maritime salvage operations.
The Concordia struck a reef off the Italian island of Giglio in January 2012 and capsized, killing 32 people.
Captain Francesco Schettino has denied charges of multiple manslaughter and abandoning ship, which could see him jailed for up to 20 years.

Some Flight Paths Unsafe.

Malaysia Airlines Boss: Some Flight Paths Unsafe.

"Skies above certain territories are simply not safe," says the commercial director, who wants a new flight paths body

Air crash investigators arrive at the wreckage of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in Grabovo, eastern Ukraine

.

A Malaysia Airlines official has called for the creation of a new body to decide which flight paths are safe following the MH17 crash in Ukraine.
Hugh Dunleavy, the company's commercial director, said airlines could no longer rely on decisions made by existing industry bodies on which volatile regions are secure to fly over.
Despite flying over a conflict zone, MH17's flight path had been approved by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, the Ukrainian authorities and the European airspace service provider Eurocontrol, Mr Dunleavy said.
Flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur is believed to have been brought down by a missile fired by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.

human skeletons found by workers

Hundreds of human skeletons found by workers in Bolivian mining city of Potosi.

Construction workers in Bolivia have stumbled upon a mass grave with the remains of hundreds of likely indigenous miners during the Spanish colonial era.
The workers found the remains as they started construction on a new building in the El Minero district of Potosi, located high up in the Andes.
"We are talking about a common grave found at about 1.8 metres, and the human remains are scattered over an area of 4x4 metres," Tomas Frias University researcher Sergio Fidel said.
The construction workers, who have had no specialised excavation training, say they found the remains of 400 to 500 people and that there may be many more.

    Roast pork with pear sauce
  • 25g butter
  • 4 ripe pears, peeled, cored and chopped into chunks
  • 1 tbsp fennel seeds
  • 150ml perry or dry cider

  • 2 tbsp golden caster sugar

Bubble everything down until the perry is reduced and has become sticky and caramelised, and the pear is tender and starting to collapse. If the pears don’t break down, use a potato masher to mash into a rough purée. Serve the sauce in a bowl alongside the pork with your favourite side dishes.

Destroy Hamas?

Destroy Hamas? Something worse would follow: Pentagon intel chief.

Defense Intelligence Agency director U.S. Army Lt. General Michael Flynn testifies before the House Intelligence Committee on ''Worldwide Threats'' in Washington February 4, 2014. REUTERS/Gary Cameron
A top Pentagon intelligence official warned on Saturday that the destruction of Hamas would only lead to something more dangerous taking its place, as he offered a grim portrait of a period of enduring regional conflict.
The remarks by Lieutenant General Michael Flynn, the outgoing head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, came as Israeli ministers signaled that a comprehensive deal to end the 20-day-old conflict in the Gaza Strip appeared remote.
