spotlight on rules, planes in war zones.

Airlines crash puts spotlight on rules governing passenger planes in war zones.

How frequently do airliners fly over conflict zones where anti-aircraft weapons are used?
Quite often.
The rules governing international over-flights vary depending on the nature of the conflict and the capabilities of the weapons known to be in use.
The Malaysian airliner was cruising at 33,000 feet. Ukraine had determined that international aircraft above the exclusion zone limit of 32,000 feet were safe, but the airliner was shot down by a separatist-operated BUK, a sophisticated surface-to-air missile system capable of hitting aircraft at an altitude of 82,000 feet.
