ARGENTINA captain and four-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi seriously considered a move to Arsenal before re-signing with Barcelona in May.
The stunning revelation comes from Spanish website Vozpopuli, which is reporting that the superstar No.10 sounded out then teammate Cesc Fabregas’s agent to talk to the Gunners.
Obviously the move never went ahead as Messi put pen to paper at the La Liga club towards the end of last season to become the world’s highest paid player.
Even if the Gunners were serious about luring the Argentine, his $358m release clause would have provided a rather large stumbling block, while his annual wage of $29m would have made a mockery of Arsenal’s strict wage structure.
Still, the revelation will lead Arsenal fans to dream what could have been.
