Islamic State claims ambush and killing of at least 50 Syrian soldiers near northern city of Raqqa.
Fighters from the extremist Islamic State group, formerly known as ISIS, say they have killed at least 50 soldiers and in north-eastern Syria.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the fighters had taken a military base near Raqqa.
The city is already a stronghold of Islamic State, which has advanced in Syria and taken over swaths of territory in neighbouring Iraq in what it has described as a bid to establish an Islamic caliphate.
A Twitter account linked to Islamic State published pictures of the beheaded corpses and heads of five soldiers killed in Raqqa province, saying they belonged to the army's 17th division.
